Using Zoom - free vs. paid

The FREE Zoom plan has a 40-minute time limit which isn't enough time to show the 30-minute video and have a 45-minute discussion (more info). Here are two options:

  • Option 1: Some groups use two 40-minute calls for their Alpha. First, they watch the video together (30 min) and then take a 5-minute break before starting the discussion time. The free version also allows breakout rooms for up to 100 participants.
  • Option 2: Groups watch the Alpha video on their own time and then join the 40-minute call for discussion only. We have provided a "share link" in MyAlpha that you can send to your Alpha guests ahead of time. Then each Small Group Host would create a Zoom meeting and send their Alpha guests the specific Zoom link so they can join the group discussion for 40 minutes.

The PAID Zoom plan does not have the 40-minute limit, so Alpha leaders can host the call ("Web portal administrator") and share their screen to show the Alpha video to the whole group. (Please download and save the video to your computer first!)

Then the Alpha leader would facilitate the break out rooms and each Host would lead their small group in a break out room. This way there is only one Zoom account and one facilitator. Log in to view the Zoom tutorial video.

Using Other Platforms

You could also use Google Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, or Microsoft Teams instead. However, there is no option for breakout groups so each Alpha Host (small group leader) would need to create their own "meeting" online and invite Alpha guests. Each church will need to decide what's best for them.
